As I watch QBs and I do constantly and as I work with QBs on a regular basis, I am truly amazed at the poor execution of their passing techniques [ mechanics]. They are unaware of even the most fundamental ways to pass a football. The basic goal when passing is to throw the ball on a straight line and yet due to factors that prevent the reaching of that goal they are permitted to continue as they have always done it. I attend the NFL Combine in Indy every year on that day when the QBs show their stuff and every year, without exception, I come away shaking my head at the poor mechanics that are displayed there. These are not novices at their trade but the finest QBs coming out of the college ranks. What amazes me even more is the response of many high level QB coaches is their opinion that "he got this far throwing the way he does it, I don't want to change him now".
QB is the only position where mechanics is rarely taught. Every other position is meticulously instructed in technique and fundamentals. What is the difficulty in coaching the QB in proper mechanics? I have an opinion on that but will leave it for another day. Every QB and I mean every QB can be better than he is. Proper mechanics, the understanding of the physics of passing the football and the execution of the fundamentals will make every QB more efficient and more consistent, period.
